[ARCHIVED] Youth Drone Certificate Program Announcement

The City of Laurel is now accepting applications for the inaugural Youth Drone Certificate Program launching in October 2025. Developed in partnership with Alpha Drones USA, Incorporated, the 10-week program provides hands-on flight training, safety and regulations instruction, and exposure to real-world drone applications. Students who successfully complete the program will receive a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Level 1 Drone Certification.

“This initiative gives Laurel’s young people a head start in a fast-growing field,” said Mayor Keith R. Sydnor. “By opening access to aviation technology right here at home, we’re preparing students for skilled careers and building a strong local talent pipeline. With practical training, an emphasis on safety and responsibility, and a clear path to certification, participants will graduate with the credentials, confidence, and connections to pursue opportunities in public safety, media, infrastructure, and beyond.”

Laurel’s Youth Drone Certificate Program is Prince George’s County’s first city-led drone programs for high school students, positioning the City of Laurel as an early leader and a model for communities statewide. This pioneering effort demonstrates how municipalities can take an active role in shaping workforce readiness, opening the door for young residents to engage with innovative technology and participate in an industry that is expected to see exponential growth in the years ahead. Nationally, the FAA reports more than 822,000 drones registered and 460,000 certificated remote pilots as of July 2025—evidence of broad adoption.

Kelvin King, Founder and CEO of Alpha Drones USA, Inc. in Morristown, NJ, said, “At Alpha Drones USA, Inc., we believe drones are gateways to new career paths. Drones offer innovative ways of solving real-world challenges in business, agriculture, utilities and many other industries." King, who is also a captain with an internationally recognized commercial airline, added, “It is our honor to partner with Mayor Sydnor to launch this groundbreaking program. We will help the students prepare to earn their Federal Aviation Administration Part 107 license as Remote Drone Pilots. Upon successful completion of all requirements, these students will conditionally become members of our Drone Hiring Program.”

Eligibility & Who Should Apply
Applicants must be City of Laurel residents, ages 16–18, and currently enrolled in high school as a sophomore, junior, or senior. A strong interest in aviation, drones, public safety, or STEM—and the ability to attend scheduled training sessions—are expected.

How to Apply
A complete application includes: the application form, a one-page personal statement, one letter of recommendation, and proof of Laurel residency. Applications can be completed and submitted electronically at www.cityoflaurel.org/ydcp.

The application deadline is Monday, September 15, 2025.  For questions, please contact the Office of the Mayor at (301) 725-5300, Ext. 2124.
