City of Laurel Black History Month Essay Contest
Theme: African Americans and Labor
Mayor Keith R. Sydnor is excited to announce the 2025 Black History Month Essay Contest! This year’s theme is “African Americans and Labor,” focusing on the significant contributions and struggles of African Americans in the labor movement.
Eligibility:
• Open to all City of Laurel resident students in 5th to 12th grade.
Guidelines:
• Each student will write a 1,000-word essay on the theme “African Americans and Labor.”
• One winner will be selected for each grade level.
Prizes:
• $50 gift card for each grade-level winner.
• Winners will be invited to City Hall to celebrate with Mayor Sydnor and the City Council.
Submission Details:
• Submit essays via email to Laurelmayor@laurel.md.us.
• Include the following information with your essay:
• Parent/Guardian name
• Student’s full name
• School name
• Grade
• Home address
Deadline:
• All essays must be submitted by February 20, 2025.
We encourage all students to reflect on the theme and explore the pivotal role African Americans have played in shaping the labor movement and workforce history.
