[ARCHIVED] City of Laurel’s Move with the Mayor Campaign earns Silver

Laurel, MD, [August 1, 2024] The City of Laurel reached the Silver Level of the 2024 Move with the Mayor Spring Mental Health and Physical Activity Challenge for its efforts to build active, connected communities.

This accomplishment underscores the city’s commitment to enhancing social connectivity, physical activity, and mental well-being among its residents.

The Spring Challenge included completing “Connect, Move, Thrive: A Roadmap to Active Connected Communities,” inspired by a national call to action to confront loneliness and isolation through social connection.

Cities earned points based on their achievements in four main areas:

  • Building a culture of connection
  • Strengthening social infrastructure in local communities
  • Enacting pro-connection public policies
  • Partnerships

Notable activities in the City included:

  • A housing summit for Fair Housing Month (April).
  • Working with UM Laurel Medical Center on a program to access mental health services for our community.
  • City of Laurel “Bike to Work” Day.
  • Move With The Mayor Mental Health Awareness Event.
  • National Kids to Parks Day.
  • City of Laurel MWTM Tennis Fun Day to relieve stress.
  • Laurel Department Park & Recreation youth sports program and adult basketball league.
  • Laurel Police Department youth bike safety tips at the Laurel Lakefest.

“The Move with the Mayor® initiative has been instrumental in bringing our community together and promoting healthier, more connected lives,” said Mayor Keith R. Sydnor. “We are honored to have reached this level and look forward to continuing our efforts to enhance the well-being of our residents.”

The MWTM Spring Challenge is just one of many efforts by Mayor Sydnor and the City to prioritize health and wellness. By participating in MWTM, Mayor Sydnor hopes to inspire other cities to join in and raise awareness about the connection between social connectedness and physical activity.
