The City of Laurel is proud to bring you its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service event.
Mayor Keith Sydnor and the Laurel City Council invite you to attend on January 20, 2025, from 10:00am - 2:00pm, at the Laurel Municipal Center, 8103 Sandy Spring Road.
This year, we have partnered with the University of Maryland Laurel Medical Center’s Oncology Department, and we will need donations and volunteers to help put together Care Packages for their patients.
The Day of Service event will start with a program at 10:00am, featuring speakers and musical selections from the Laurel High School Choir. Then we will assemble the Care Packages for Cancer patients.
With 175 bags to assemble, we will need assistance in gathering the items UM Laurel Medical Center has sent us to go into the care packages. All the water we need for the packages has been donated by Sam’s Club…Thank You! But we still will need donations of the following items:
- Warm blankets and socks to keep them cozy during treatment.
- Moisturizers and lip balm to soothe dry skin and lips.
- Headwear and/or salon gift cards to help them cope with hair loss.
- Snacks to keep them nourished.
- Entertainment such as books, coloring books, journals, headphones, movies, or podcasts to distract them from pain and boredom.
- Inspiration such as cards, letters, photos, or quotes to show them your support and love.
If you can help organize a drive to gather these items, please contact Carreen Koubek at 301-725-5300 ext. 2109 to get more information or arrange drop off of the collected items.
To get these care packages assembled, we will need YOUR help! If you would like to volunteer, please call Ms. Koubek at 301-725-5300 ext. 2109. Come for the remembrance program for Dr. King and stay for the volunteer opportunity! Remember, it’s a Day On, not a Day Off!
