Laurel, MD [August 2, 2024] Mayor Keith R. Sydnor continues in his efforts to expand academic opportunities for our younger citizens. Recently, the Mayor visited the National Cryptologic Museum in Ft. Meade, MD. There he learned about the museum’s programs for grades 4th -12th. Mayor Sydnor also discussed engagement with the Laurel community.

Mayor Sydnor and NCM stakeholders share a mutual interest in the objective of the Mayor’s and City of Laurel’s Safe Summer Nights Program. The initiative seeks to provide a safe, supportive, and inclusive space for the youth of our community throughout the summer.

"I would like to thank the museum director and staff for taking the time to meet with me”, stated Mayor Sydnor. “I had a great time learning about cryptography and the National Cryptologic Museum’s dedication to STEM education. I look forward to working with them as I continue to expose the students of Laurel to various lanes of academia and enrich their future."

The Safe Summer Nights Program launched July 13, 2024, at the Laurel Armory Anderson & Murphy Community Center (422 Montgomery St, Laurel, MD). Parents and children ages 12-16 are invited to participate. Attendees can expect a variety of enriching activities, including sports, arts, education, games, arts and crafts, and other exciting events hosted by local businesses.

The National Cryptologic Museum is the National Security Agency’s gateway to the public and educates visitors about the role of cryptology in shaping history. The NCM collects, preserves, and displays unique cryptologic artifacts. The museum also shares the stories of the people, technologies, and methods that have shaped cryptologic history. NCM activities include educational field trips and programs for students grades 4th-12th, focusing on STEM education, social studies, and linguistics.

To register for the Safe Summer Nights Program, visit www.cityoflaurel.org/SafeSummerNights,  questions, call (301) 725-5300.

The National Cryptologic Museum is the only fully public museum in the Intelligence Community. NCM is open Monday through Saturday, 10 am - 4pm. Admission is free, no reservations required — click here for more information about the museum or to plan a visit!
