[ARCHIVED] Hurricane Season is from June 1st to November 30th

Hurricane Season 1

Are You Prepared for the upcoming Hurricane Season? Mayor Keith R. Sydnor would like everyone to stay in the know and be ready for an active 2024 Hurricane Season, which lasts from June 1st to November 30th.

This season the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting an above average hurricane season and is calling for 17 to 25 named storms, with 4 - 7 major hurricanes set to impact Southern and Eastern coastal States. We urge all individuals and communities to prepare with us for potential severe weather.

When is the best time to prepare for a hurricane? NOW! Here are some ways you can be ready:

  • Develop a Plan - Identify where you will evacuate to and how your family will communicate. For more information developing your plan visit https://www.ready.gov/plan
  • Assemble a Disaster Kit - Following a storm you may be without power or access to food and water for several days. Prepare canned foods, bottled water, and necessities to ensure you and your family can survive for at least 3 days. To learn more about building a kit visit https://www.ready.gov/kit
  • Be Insured – If you live in a flood prone area make sure your home has  flood insurance. Following a disastrous storm, insurance is a critical resource to rebuilding and recovering. Visit https://www.floodsmart.gov/ to learn more about flood insurance.
  • Strengthen Your Home – Prepare your home to withstand the winds, rain, and flooding a storm can bring.
  • Preparation Tips for Older Americans can be found at https://www.ready.gov/older-adults and for Persons with Disabilities, visit https://www.ready.gov/disability.
  • Pet Preparation - Remember to include your four-legged family members in your emergency preparations. Visit https://www.ready.gov/pets for tips.

Mayor Sydnor and the Laurel City Council want to ensure that the citizens of Laurel have as much information as possible to help them better prepare for emergencies. Please take advantage of these tips from the Department of Community Resources and Emergency Management to be ready for this Hurricane Season., Make 2024 your year to prepare!
