[ARCHIVED] Move with the Mayor - Spring Mental Health and Physical Activity Challenge

City of Laurel, MD, April 10, 2024 – Mayor Keith R. Sydnor announced today that the City of Laurel joined a nationwide initiative to raise awareness about the role of social connection in promoting mental and physical health.

 

 

 The City of Laurel, in partnership with the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, is participating in the Move with the Mayor® (MWTM) Spring Mental Health and Physical Activity Challenge. The month-long challenge begins Wednesday, May 1, 2024, and coincides with Mental Health Awareness Month.

The challenge aims to promote mental and physical health by encouraging daily movement while fostering social connection through group activities. Mayor Sydnor invites residents of all ages to join the challenge by participating in activities like biking, walking, running meditation, yoga, working out and more during May.

 

 The City of Laurel has the following events scheduled: 

  • May 4, 2024 - The of City of Laurel Physical Fitness for Mental Health Awareness Challenge. Kick -Off Announcement A picture containing text, severalDescription automatically generated
  • May 4, 2024 @ 9:00am to 11:00am -Wellness Walk- Riverfront Park 
  •  May 11, 2024@ 7:00pm to 8:00pm Virtual Showing of Angst Move
  •  May 18, 2024- 10:00am to 1:00pm -Laurel Helping Hands Mental Health Awareness Event-204 Fort Meade Road 
  •  May 18, 2024 -4:00pm to 6:00pm -Fun Tennis for beginners- Alice B. McCullough Tennis Court 8th Street

 The challenge encourages residents to share their experiences and support each other on social media using #MoveWithTheMayor & #Mayorsydnor4fitness.

“Physical activity combined with social connection is good for our hearts and minds,” says Mayor Sydnor. “They can help us cope with anxiety, depression, stress, and other mental health challenges. I invite all City of Laurel residents to commit to connecting and moving more with our community.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasizes that mental health is integral to overall health. Mental health disorders increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions.
