Public Works Holiday Schedule
WeThe City observes the following holidays and offices will be closed. The Department does not provide refuse / recycling collection services on these City Holidays. Please check the following schedule for changes in your refuse / recycling collection. You can also go to the website's calendar format of Public Works' holiday trash schedules and events.
City Holidays & Changes in Refuse / Recycling Collections

Holidays falling on a Saturday are observed on Friday. Holidays falling on a Sunday are observed on Monday.
Altered Refuse & Recycling Schedules
If a holiday falls on a Monday:
- Monday's residential and commercial refuse and recycling will be collected on Tuesday. Tuesday's residential refuse and recycling will be collected on Wednesday.
If a holiday falls on a Tuesday:
- Tuesday's residential and commercial refuse and recycling will be collected on Wednesday, the day after the holiday.
If a holiday falls on a Wednesday:
- Wednesday's refuse and recycling will be collected on Thursday, the day after the holiday.
If a holiday falls on a Thursday:
- Thursday's refuse and recycling will be collected on Wednesday, the day before the holiday.
If a holiday falls on a Friday:
- Collections will move to Wednesday before the holiday.
Thanksgiving holiday schedule:
- Thursday and Friday refuse and recycling will be collected on Wednesday, the day before the holiday.
Any changes to the refuse and recycling collections will be published on the City's website and the City's social media pages and included in the after-hours voicemail message and email bounce-back message. When in doubt, call 301-725-0088 or email the Department of Public Works!
Seasonal Public Works Events & Services
Winter (December, January & February)
Christmas Tree Collection
During January, trees will be collected on Wednesday of each week. Please place your tree wherever you normally place your trash. Residents do not need to call in for a collection, but it is recommended.
Spring (March, April & May)
Spring Clean-up Month / Community Recycling
Residential and Yard Debris pickups will be offered every week (except for holiday weeks). Additional yard debris collections will be offered throughout the month of May. The Department of Public Works will participate in neighborhood and community projects as well as the Main Street Festival. The City will also hold a city-wide recycling event - call Public Works for more details.
Summer (June, July & August)
Street Sweeping, Public Safety Maintenance & Mosquito Control Program
The Department begins its annual city-wide street sweeping activities. The street sweeper will be in your neighborhood on your refuse collection days. The Department's Street Crews will begin street repairs and crosswalks enhancements. The annual Mosquito Control Program will begin.
Fall (September, October & November)
Leaf Collection
Beginning sometime in October, the City provides weekly leaf vacuum services. The leaf vacuum will continue through the beginning of December. Please refer to the Leaf Collection Schedule and Map for information on how to prepare for leaf vacuum and to determine the collection day for your street.
Special Refuse / Yard Debris Collections
In addition to the regular refuse and recycling collection provided to residents on a weekly basis, the Department of Public Works also offers "special refuse collection" and yard debris collections throughout the year. Please refer to the DPW Calendar for the schedule of dates. Detailed information about the collections can be found in the Resident Information Calendar and on the Trash Collection and Bulk Pickup page.
A collection of large, bulky items will be made as shown on the calendar. There is a base fee of $10 charged for each residential special pickup. An additional fee of $5 / $10 / $15 / $20 / $25 per item is charged for certain items. See our Bulky Item page for more information. Requests for pickups must be made by the Monday before the desired pickup. For your convenience, you may leave a message on our after-hours voicemail or email Public Works.
Yard debris collection is Free! But you must make a request to be on the pickup. The date for yard debris pickups is shown on the calendar. Additional collection days are offered in April.
