Learn About Your Local Government!
What are the dynamics of your local government? What is a Strong Mayor government? Where do your concerns go to when reported? These questions and more can be answered at Laurel Citizens University!
Gain a better understanding how your local government functions through participation and interaction with knowledgeable staff as you learn how finances, operations, projects and services are developed, distributed and executed, and what each Department has to offer our community and businesses.
What Are the Requirements to Participate in Laurel Citizens University?
Registration is limited to 20 participants, with selection made on a first-come, first-serve basis:
- You must be a City of Laurel resident or business owner.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Applicants may not currently hold a position as an elected official or seek office during the duration of the program.
What is the Cost?
Sessions are free and include all course materials, a graduation ceremony, a class photo and a diploma upon completion. Make sure you are able to make all the sessions. We can allow for missing ONE SESSION ONLY during the program.
Laurel Citizens University Fall 2025 Schedule
The first session will begin on October 2, 2025, and will be held Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 8:30pm:
- Mayor/Council/Clerk/City Administrator Offices: October 2, 2025 (Council Chambers)
- Information Technology/Communications: October 9, 2025 (Council Chambers/LTV Studio Tour)
- Budget and Personnel Services/Emergency Management: October 16, 2025 (Council Chambers/EOC Tour)
- Fire Marshal & Permit Services/Economic & Community Development: October 23, 2025 (Council Chambers)
- Public Works: October 30, 2025 (Public Works Facility/Tour of Facility)
- Human Services: November 6, 2025 (LMSC/Tour of Center)
- Police: November 13, 2025 (Partnership Activity Center/Tour of Station)
- Parks and Recreation: November 20, 2025 (RJD Community Center/Gym Activity)
- Graduation at Mayor and City Council Meeting: Monday, November 24, 2025 (Council Chambers)
