IT Apprenticeship & Internship Programs
Are you looking to gain work experience, build your IT skills, and make a difference in your community?
The City of Laurel Department of Information Technology currently offers two exciting ways for youth to engage with us, and we hope to bring our internship program back online in 2027 to provide opportunities for college students.
Mayor's Summer Jobs Program
The Department of Information Technology proudly participates in the City of Laurel Mayor's Summer Jobs Program to provide younger high school students with an introductory experience to working in the Information Technology field.
Who Can Apply? High school students ages 14-16 who live in Laurel, Maryland.
What To Expect? A fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience working in various City departments, including Information Technology, Parks & Recreation, Public Works, and more. This program is perfect for students who want to:
- Explore career interests
- Develop professional skills
- Earn money over the summer

Work Period: July-August.
Apprenticeship Maryland - Youth Apprenticeship Program
Beginning in August 2024, the Department of Information Technology has partnered with Prince George's County Schools and the Apprenticeship Maryland program to provide a youth apprenticeship program for high school juniors and seniors. Through this 450-hour paid apprenticeship, students partner with our IT staff to gain hands-on job experience working in the IT field.
Who Can Apply? PG County high school juniors and seniors interested in IT careers.
What Is It? A paid apprenticeship opportunity through a partnership with Apprenticeship Maryland. Students will:
- Work a paid position within the City’s IT Department while earning high school credits
- Gain real-world experience in technology and IT systems
- Build a foundation for future career success in the tech industry
How to Apply: Learn more about Apprenticeship Maryland at labor.maryland.gov/employment/appr/youthappr.shtml, and talk to your school Career Coach and/or Guidance Counselor about whether you could fit this into your high school schedule, and how to apply! Applicants must be recommended to the program by a technology teacher.
Application Period: June-July.
Work Period: 450 hours between June and April.
College Internship Programs
Our college internship program is not currently active. We are targeting 2027 to reestablish partnerships with local colleges and universities to offer internships in the areas of Geographic Information Systems, Cybersecurity, and IT Support.
