Automated Speed Camera Enforcement Program

About the program

Altumint manages the automated Speed Camera program citations and its equipment on behalf of the City of Laurel. The City is one of many jurisdictions in the Washington Metropolitan area to use automated speed camera enforcement to reduce traffic crashes, pedestrian accidents and save lives. The program provides automated enforcement in residential areas with speed limits of 20 mph or more that are within a half mile radius of a dedicated school zone. Speed cameras provide police with one more tool to protect pedestrians and other motorists by targeting aggressive driving behaviors.

The fine for violating the posted speed limit is $40 for each violation. Violators traveling 12 miles over the posted speed limit will activate the speed camera that results in the issuance of a citation that is mailed through the U.S. Postal Service. All violators have the option to pay the fine or contest the violation by requesting a court hearing within the time limit indicated on the citation.

Photo violations do not result in points and cannot be used to increase a person's insurance rates. Recipients of citations may contest them in District Court. The operation of school zone cameras are restricted to Monday through Friday, from 6 am to 8 pm.

Payment of Fines

If your vehicle was issued a citation, you have thirty (30) days including weekends and holidays from the date of issuance to pay the penalty shown on the ticket. A late fee of twenty-five dollars ($25) is added if not paid within the first 30 days. A $20 flagging fee is added if an additional 30 days pass without a payment made on or before the next the due date.

Photo violations do not result in points and cannot be used to increase a person's insurance rates. Be sure to go online to view the video of your infraction (photos do not show motion/action). The video is what's used as evidence in court.
