Extreme Heat Event Thursday - Saturday

News - Press Releases Posted on July 26, 2023

The City of Laurel’s Department of Community Resources and Emergency Management (CREM) is alerting residents to an imminent extreme heat event. A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11:00 AM-8:00 PM Thursday, July 27th.

Another Excessive Heat Watch will be in effect on Friday from morning to evening.

Temperatures on Thursday are expected to be in the upper 90s, with warm low temperatures intensifying the impact from consecutive days of high heat and humidity.

Severe storms are possible, with damaging wind gusts and large hail being the primary threats. On Friday and Saturday, heat Indices are likely to reach 100 to 110 degrees during late morning through early evening.

Severe thunderstorms may occur on both days, bringing locally damaging winds and large hail.

The community is urged to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this hazardous weather condition. The extreme temperatures mean there is the potential for heat-related illnesses, especially for outdoor activities.

Heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, are real dangers during this extreme weather event, particularly for vulnerable populations. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, and nausea.

Heatstroke presents with high body temperature, confusion, and rapid pulse. To prevent such illnesses, individuals should stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, stay well-hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and wear appropriate clothing.

Please check on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors and utilize cooling centers if available.
