Election Season begins May 1st in Laurel

Important Information for Candidates and Voters


Running for Office

The next City Election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 7, 2023.  The Mayor and all five council seats are up for election: Mayor is an at-large seat i.e. can be from either Ward; City Council is 1 seat At-Large, 2 seats representing Ward 1 and 2 seats representing Ward 2.  Council candidates must run for election from the Ward in which they live, unless running at-large.

Candidate packets are available May 1, 2023 - July 14, 2023, 12:00 pm

**Please note*** An appointment is required to pick up a Candidate Packet. Appointments can be scheduled by contacting the City Clerk at 301-723-5300 Ext. 2121 or Email: elections@laurel.md.us  

Candidate Registration: The deadline to return completed Candidate Packets is July 21, 2023, by 12:00pm.

Qualifications for Mayor

The Mayor shall be a person of known integrity, experience, and sound judgment, not less than twenty-five (25) years of age, a citizen of the United States, shall be registered to vote in City elections and a resident of the City for the two (2) years immediately preceding the date of his or her election. The Mayor shall hold office for four (4) years from the second regular meeting after the election in November of the year of his or her election and until the qualification of his or her successor. The Mayor shall remain a resident of the City while holding office.

Qualifications for Council

City Council members shall be persons of known integrity, experience, and sound judgment, not less than twenty-one (21) years of age, citizens of the United States, registered to vote in City elections and resident of the City and the ward for which they seek election for one (1) year (three hundred sixty-five (365) days) immediately preceding the date of their election. Each Council member shall hold his or her office for two (2) years from the date of the second regular meeting after the election in November of the year of his or her election and until the qualification of his or her successor. A Council member shall remain a resident of the City, within the ward from which they were elected and must remain a registered voter within such ward, unless elected at-large, while holding office.
