Black History Month Essay Contest

City of Laurel Mayor Keith R. Sydnor is holding a Black History Month Essay Contest for Students. Winners will receive $250 gift cards.

The Black History Month theme is "African Americans and the Arts," spanning the many impacts African Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements and more.

Criteria:

  • Write an 800-word essay about visual arts, music cultural movement, or a person/organization that played a pivotal role in African American History.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a City of Laurel resident.
  • High School Student - Grades 9 - 12
  • Middle School Student - Grades 6 - 8
  • Elementary School Student - Grades 3 - 5

All essays must be submitted to laurelmayor@laurel.md.us via .pdf format by Monday, February 19, 2024. Please include student's name, address, school they attend and grade when submitting the essay. The winners will be notified via email on Friday, February 23, 2024. A winner will be chosen for each grade level and winners will receive a $250 Visa Gift Card.
